Linda, you have it right. It is pointless to respond to hundreds of job ads. Pick the companies and industries you want to work in and start contacting people there. Some online services like LinkedIn can help you find the right people to get in contact with. Then send your resumes and even go old school and make phone calls and start talking with people at those companies and in your industry. This is how our parents did it before there were job boards on the internet where we could easily respond to ads all day. The easier it is for you to apply for a job, the easier it is for everyone to apply for that job.

The key is to have a realistic and achievable resolution. Aiming for nearly impossible feats might seem like a good way to motivate yourself, but far too often it just sets you up for failure. Instead, choose an overall resolution, and then add details to it to make it achievable for where you are in life right now.

I do help my clients develop their commercials. One thing to remember is that even though they're prepared in advance, you want them to sound natural when you're actually delivering your "commercial" or pitch. A "commercial" on YouTube that you can send using a link can be an effective tool. This is especially true if the position you're targeting involves your interacting with clients or customers, talking to the media, training etc. That way the prospective hiring manager can see you in action.

I agree that an individual on a career search does need some kind of rehearsed "commercial", both for interviews as well as networking. My questions are do you help develop this "commercial" during your career coaching and do you recommend using something like YouTube to create a commercial online that you could send to prospective employers.

Great points Linda, I'm going to share this on my LinkedIn! Business is about people, always has been and always will be. People only want to associate with other people (and hence do business with such people) of whom they trust and know. Building a relationship is a must do!

Hi nice article there. I am the managing partner of a leading recruitment consulting company India from India. Finding and evaluating potential employees takes a lot of time and energy, so if one does not have the time, or if the company's staff is not experienced in all aspects of the hiring process - only then must one consider using a professional third-party recruiter or headhunter. Recruiters like us not only have experience finding qualified candidates for their clients, they are also able to tap into a larger network of job seekers, many of whom they’ve screened previously for other positions. If a client is concerned about spending corporate dollars for a job that she / he could arguably do herself / himself, the it is also effective to bear in mind that recruiters offer a full range of services. Most search firms like us will observe a year-long moratorium on recruiting employees after placing them with a client's firm.

As a recruiter, I've been in contact with some people whose response to my inquiring about them is negative. Some people think that it is bothersome and an annoyance to be contacted by a recruiter. My response (I think) makes much more sense. Like this blog post says, a recruiter can be the "gate keeper" to an interview with a company. If you are being contacted by a recruiter or a recruiter expresses interest in you somehow, they must feel as though you pass muster...feel as though you are WORTHY of representing them to the client. Remember, the client hires the recruiter to find strong candidates for the position so the recruiter wants to send over the best people s/he can. So if a recruiter takes interest in you, consider that an honor that they think highly enough of you to represent them to the client.
